  • The earth's radius is about 6,378 km.

  • An earthquake is the shaking of the earth caused by the release of energy.
  • The point where energy is released is called the focus or hypocentre.
  • The point on the surface nearest to the focus is called the epicentre.

3. Types and Behaviour of Earthquake Waves

  • Earthquake waves are of two main types: body waves and surface waves.
  • Body waves are generated at the focus and travel through the body of the earth.
  • Surface waves are generated when body waves interact with surface rocks.

4. Shadow Zone and Seismograph Patterns

  • A shadow zone is a region where earthquake waves are not recorded.
  • For both P and S waves, the shadow zone lies between 105 and 145 degrees from the epicentre.
  • Seismographs within 105 degrees record both P and S waves.
