Water Vapour and Humidity
- Water vapour varies from zero to four per cent by volume of the atmosphere.
- Water in the atmosphere exists in three forms: gaseous, liquid, and solid.
- Moisture enters the atmosphere through evaporation from water bodies and transpiration from plants.
Evaporation and Condensation
- Evaporation changes water from liquid to gaseous state.
- Heat is the main cause of evaporation.
- Latent heat of vaporisation is the heat needed to convert a unit mass of liquid into vapour without a change in temperature.
Dew, Frost, Fog, Mist, and Smog
- After condensation, moisture may appear as dew, frost, fog, or clouds.
- Dew forms as water droplets on cooler surfaces of solid objects such as stones, grass, and leaves.
- For dew formation, the dew point must be above the freezing point.
Clouds
- Clouds are masses of minute water droplets or tiny ice crystals formed by condensation in free air at considerable heights.
- Clouds are classified into four basic types: cirrus, cumulus, stratus, and nimbus.
- Cirrus clouds form at high altitudes between 8,000 m and 12,000 m.
