  • Drainage system means the network of these channels.

Drainage patterns

  • Dendritic pattern looks like the branches of a tree and is common in the northern plains.
  • Radial pattern develops when rivers originate from a hill and flow in all directions.
  • Trellis pattern appears when primary tributaries flow parallel and secondary tributaries join at right angles.

Himalayan drainage system

  • The Himalayan drainage system includes the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra river basins.
  • These rivers are perennial because they are fed by snowmelt and rainfall.
  • They form deep gorges, V-shaped valleys, braided channels, flood plains, ox-bow lakes, and deltas.

Indus system

  • The Indus is the westernmost Himalayan river in India and is also called Sindhu.
  • It originates from a glacier near Bokhar Chu in the Tibetan region at 4,164 m altitude.
  • In Tibet, it is known as Singi Khamban, meaning Lion's mouth.
