What to Focus On
- Order matters in ordered pairs.
- Cartesian product means all possible ordered pairs from two sets.
- If either set is empty, the product is empty.
- A relation is a subset of a cartesian product.
- Domain = set of first elements.
- Range = set of second elements.
- A function is a relation with exactly one image for each domain element.
- Domain of a function must be the whole set A.
- A function is written as f: A → B.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A Cartesian product is the same as a normal pair of sets, so A × B equals B × A.
If one set is empty, the Cartesian product is still formed using the other set.
The number of elements in A × B is n(A) + n(B).
Memory Tips
