  • Mean, median and mode are measures of central tendency.
  • Statistics helps in collecting, organising, analysing and interpreting data.
  • A central value alone does not describe spread or consistency.
  • Range is a measure of dispersion.
  • Range uses only the highest and lowest values.
  • It gives only a rough idea of spread.
  • Mean deviation is based on absolute deviations.
  • Mean deviation can be taken about mean or median.
  • The sum of deviations from the mean is always zero.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mean and median always give the full picture of a data set, so dispersion is unnecessary.

Range tells how all the data values are spread, so it is as complete as variance or standard deviation.

For median, the middle value is found the same way for odd and even number of observations.
