- Left hand limit is the expected value from the left of a point.
- Right hand limit is the expected value from the right of a point.
- If left and right hand limits differ, the limit does not exist.
- A limit may exist even when the function value at that point is not defined.
- If the left and right hand limits at a point differ, the limit does not exist.
- Infinite limits are excluded from the chapter.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
If the function value exists at a point, the limit at that point must also exist and be the same.
To find a limit, always substitute the point directly into the expression.
If the denominator becomes 0, the limit is always zero or always undefined without checking the numerator.
