Topics in Election and Representation

1

1. Elections and Democratic Representation

  • In a large democracy, all citizens cannot take part directly in every decision.
  • Representatives are elected to make decisions and run the government.
  • Elections are not only about voting; they are about how votes are counted and how winners are chosen.
2

2. First Past the Post System

  • Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections in India use the First Past the Post system, also called the Plurality System.
  • The country is divided into 543 constituencies for FPTP elections.
  • Each constituency elects one representative.
3

3. Proportional Representation and STV

  • In proportional representation, seats are distributed according to the share of votes a party gets.
  • Voters usually vote for a party, not for individual candidates.
  • This system is used in Israel, Netherlands, Argentina, and Portugal.
4

4. Reservation of Constituencies

  • Reserved constituencies are different from separate electorates.
  • In reserved constituencies, all voters vote, but only candidates from the reserved community can contest.
  • Separate electorates allowed only voters of a community to vote for that community's representative.
