1. Meaning of Rights
- A right is essentially an entitlement or a justified claim.
- Rights are what a person is entitled to as a citizen, as an individual, and as a human being.
- Not everything a person wants can be called a right.
2. Natural Rights and Human Rights
- In seventeenth and eighteenth century political theory, rights were said to be given by nature or God and derived from natural law.
- Natural rights are inalienable and cannot be taken away because they are not conferred by ruler or society.
- Natural rights theorists identified exactly three natural rights: life, liberty, and property.
3. Kant and Human Dignity
- Immanuel Kant was an eighteenth century German philosopher.
- Kant argued that human beings possess dignity, not price.
- What has a price can be replaced by something equivalent; what has dignity has no equivalent.
4. Legal Rights and the State
- A Bill of Rights is enshrined in the constitutions of many countries.
- In India these are called Fundamental Rights.
- Legal and constitutional recognition gives rights special status in society.
