1. Meaning of Rights

  • A right is essentially an entitlement or a justified claim.
  • Rights are what a person is entitled to as a citizen, as an individual, and as a human being.
  • Not everything a person wants can be called a right.

2. Natural Rights and Human Rights

  • In seventeenth and eighteenth century political theory, rights were said to be given by nature or God and derived from natural law.
  • Natural rights are inalienable and cannot be taken away because they are not conferred by ruler or society.
  • Natural rights theorists identified exactly three natural rights: life, liberty, and property.
