Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Simple Expressions and Values

  • An arithmetic expression is a mathematical phrase formed with numbers and operations.
  • Every arithmetic expression has a value, which is the number it evaluates to.
  • The expression 13 plus 2 evaluates to 15.
2

2. Terms in Expressions

  • Terms are the parts of an expression separated by a + sign.
  • A minus sign must first be rewritten as + of the inverse to identify terms.
  • All subtractions in an expression must be converted to additions to identify the terms.
3

3. Swapping and Grouping Terms

  • In an expression with two terms, swapping the terms does not change the value.
  • Grouping the terms of an expression in different ways gives the same value.
  • Adding the terms of an expression in any order gives the same value.
4

4. Brackets and Order of Evaluation

  • When brackets are present, evaluate the expressions inside the brackets first.
  • Brackets help show the correct order of operations.
  • Without brackets, terms are used to decide the order of evaluation.
