Topics in Arithmetic Expressions
1. Simple Expressions and Values
- An arithmetic expression is a mathematical phrase formed with numbers and operations.
- Every arithmetic expression has a value, which is the number it evaluates to.
- The expression 13 plus 2 evaluates to 15.
2. Terms in Expressions
- Terms are the parts of an expression separated by a + sign.
- A minus sign must first be rewritten as + of the inverse to identify terms.
- All subtractions in an expression must be converted to additions to identify the terms.
3. Swapping and Grouping Terms
- In an expression with two terms, swapping the terms does not change the value.
- Grouping the terms of an expression in different ways gives the same value.
- Adding the terms of an expression in any order gives the same value.
4. Brackets and Order of Evaluation
- When brackets are present, evaluate the expressions inside the brackets first.
- Brackets help show the correct order of operations.
- Without brackets, terms are used to decide the order of evaluation.
