1. Exponential Notation and Repeated Multiplication

  • n^a means n multiplied by itself a times.
  • 5^4 = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 625.
  • The base is the repeated factor, and the exponent shows how many times it is used.

  • The number of possible outfits can be found by multiplying the number of choices in each category.
  • Estu has 4 dresses and 3 caps, so the number of combinations is 4 × 3 = 12.

3. Division of Powers, Zero Exponent, and Negative Exponents

  • When two powers have the same base, division can be simplified by subtracting the exponents.
  • 2^4 ÷ 2^3 = 2^(4-3) = 2^1 = 2.
  • For a non-zero base, x^0 = 1.

4. Powers of 10 and Expanded Form

  • 47561 can be expanded as (4 × 10^4) + (7 × 10^3) + (5 × 10^2) + (6 × 10^1) + (1 × 10^0).
  • 561.903 can be expanded using positive and negative powers of 10.
  • Any number can be written as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.
