Card 1Concept of Force

What is force?

Answer

Force can make an object move from rest, change the speed or direction of a moving object, and change the shape of an object.

Card 2

Answer

Card 3

Answer

Card 4Concept of Force

Why must force be described with both magnitude and direction?

Answer

Force is a physical quantity that needs size and direction to be fully known, just like velocity and acceleration. A force of the same size can have a different effect if its direction changes.

Card 5Units of Force

What is the SI unit of force?

Answer

The SI unit of force is newton. Its symbol is N. One newton is the force that produces an acceleration of 1 m s^-2 on an object of mass 1 kg.

Card 6

Answer

Card 7

Answer

Card 8Measuring Force

How can force be measured in general?

Answer

A spring balance can measure the magnitude of a force in general, not only weight. It shows how much force is applied when an object is pulled.
