Core Idea of Tense

Tense shows the time of an action through the form of a verb.

Present Tense

Simple Present Tense: subject + base form of a verb [e.g., I swim.]

Present Continuous Tense: subject + is/am/are + -ing form of a verb [e.g., I am swimming.]

Present Perfect Tense: subject + have/has + past participle form of a verb [e.g., I have swum...]

Present Perfect Continuous Tense: subject + have/has been + -ing form of a verb [e.g., I have been swimming...]

Past Tense

Simple Past Tense: subject + past tense form of a verb [e.g., I swam.]

Past Continuous Tense: subject + was/were + -ing form of a verb [e.g., I was swimming. We were swimming.]

Past Perfect Tense: subject + had + past participle form of a verb [e.g., I had swum...]

Past Perfect Continuous Tense: subject + had been + -ing form of a verb [e.g., I had been swimming...]

Future Tense

Simple Future Tense: subject + will/shall + base form of a verb [e.g., I will swim.]
