What to Focus On

  • Subtraction means taking away.
  • Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference
  • Used in real-life situations like shopping, counting, and measuring.

  • No borrowing needed.
  • Each digit of the top number is bigger than the bottom number.
  • Start from the right (ones) and go to the left (thousands).

  • Used when a digit in the top number is smaller than the bottom number.
  • We borrow 1 from the left place.
  • 1 borrowed = 10 in the current place.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

You can subtract a bigger digit from a smaller digit in the same column without borrowing.

You can subtract in any order — A - B is the same as B - A.

When you borrow, you subtract 1 from the next column, but you don’t change the current column.
