  • Add digits column by column: ones, tens, hundreds.
  • No carry-over if sum in each column is less than 10.

  • If sum in a column is 10 or more, carry over to the next column.
  • Always add the carried number in the next step.

  • Align numbers by place value (ones under ones, tens under tens, etc.).
  • Carry over when sum is 10 or more.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When adding, I can just add all the digits straight down without caring about place value.

If I carry over a number, I don’t need to write it down — I can just remember it.

When adding three numbers, I can add two first and ignore the third until later.
