What to Focus On

  • The short hand is the hour hand.
  • The long hand is the minute hand.
  • When the minute hand is at 12, it is 'o'clock'.

  • a.m. is from midnight to noon.
  • p.m. is from noon to midnight.
  • 12 midnight = 12 a.m., 12 noon = 12 p.m.

  • 24-hour clock runs from 00:00 to 23:59.
  • No a.m. or p.m. is used.
  • To convert p.m. time to 24-hour format, add 12 to the hour.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The hour hand pointing near a number means it's that hour, even if the minute hand is not at 12.

Quarter past means the minute hand is at 15, so it's 15 minutes to the next hour.

a.m. means morning and p.m. means night, so 6 p.m. is still evening.

Memory Tips

Hour hand is short, minute hand is long

1 hour = 60 minutes

O'clock means minute hand at 12

Half past means 30 minutes
