Telling Time Correct to the Nearest Minute

  • A clock has two hands: the shorter hour hand and the longer minute hand.
  • The minute hand moves from one number to the next in 5 minutes.
  • There are 60 minutes in 1 hour.

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day

Operations on Time Measures

  • We can add and subtract time just like numbers, but with carrying and borrowing across units.
  • When adding seconds, if total ≥ 60, convert to minutes and carry over.
  • When adding minutes, if total ≥ 60, convert to hours and carry over.
