What to Focus On

  • A fraction represents a part of a whole.
  • The denominator shows how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
  • The numerator shows how many parts are being considered.
  • Numerator is written in words as a counting number.
  • Denominator is written as an ordinal plural (e.g., fifths, eighths).
  • For denominator 2: use 'half' or 'halves'.
  • Unit fraction: numerator is 1.
  • Like fractions: same denominator.
  • Unlike fractions: different denominators.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The bigger the denominator, the bigger the fraction.

You can add fractions by adding both numerators and denominators separately.

The numerator tells how many pieces there are in total, not just the shaded ones.
