What to Focus On

  • Always start multiplying from the ones place.
  • When multiplying by the tens digit, write a 0 in the ones place first.
  • Add the two partial products to get the final answer.

  • Multiplying any number by 1 gives the same number (Identity Property).
  • Multiplying any number by 0 gives 0 (Zero Property).
  • Changing the order of numbers does not change the product (Commutative Property).

  • To multiply by 10 → add 1 zero
  • To multiply by 100 → add 2 zeros
  • To multiply by 1000 → add 3 zeros

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When multiplying by a 2-digit number, students forget to add a zero when multiplying by the tens digit.

Adding extra zeros when multiplying by 10, 100, or 1000 based on guesswork, not counting digits.

Thinking that 1 × any number = 1.
