What to Focus On

  • Subtraction means taking away.
  • Minuend – Subtrahend = Difference
  • We cannot change the order of numbers in subtraction. For example, 8 – 3 ≠ 3 – 8.
  • Always write the minuend on top and subtrahend below.
  • Subtract column by column from right to left (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.).
  • Borrow from the next higher place if needed.
  • Understand what is being asked.
  • Find the total and what is taken away.
  • Subtract carefully with proper alignment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

You can subtract a bigger number from a smaller number and get a positive answer.

You can subtract from right to left without borrowing when the top digit is smaller.

When you subtract a number from itself, the answer is the same number.
