Card 1Apostrophe Use

What does the apostrophe (') show in a sentence?

Answer

The apostrophe (') shows possession — that something belongs to someone or something. For example: 'Riya's book' means the book belongs to Riya.

Card 2Singular Nouns

How do you show possession for a singular noun like 'boy'?

Answer

Add 's to the singular noun. For example: 'the boy's toy' means the toy belongs to the boy.

Card 3Singular Nouns

How do you write 'the bag of the girl' using an apostrophe?

Answer

The bag of the girl becomes 'the girl's bag'. We add 's to 'girl' because it is a singular noun.

Card 4Plural Nouns Ending in -s

How do you show possession for plural nouns ending in -s, like 'dogs'?

Answer

For plural nouns ending in -s, add only an apostrophe (') after the s. For example: 'the dogs' toys' means the toys belong to the dogs.

Card 5Plural Nouns Ending in -s

Rewrite: 'the tails of the cats' using an apostrophe.

Answer

The tails of the cats becomes 'the cats' tails'. Since 'cats' is plural and ends in -s, we add only an apostrophe.

Card 6Irregular Plural Nouns

How do you show possession for plural nouns that do NOT end in -s, like 'children'?

Answer

For irregular plural nouns like 'children' or 'women', add 's just like singular nouns. Example: 'children's books' means books for children.

Card 7Irregular Plural Nouns

Write 'the toys of the children' using an apostrophe.

Answer

The toys of the children becomes 'the children's toys'. Even though 'children' is plural, it doesn’t end in -s, so we add 's.

Card 8Non-Living Objects

Is it correct to say 'the chair's legs'? Why or why not?

Answer

It is not commonly correct. We usually don’t use 's with non-living things like 'chair'. Instead, we say 'the legs of the chair'. But some expressions like 'the butterfly’s wings' are accepted.
