Functions of the Skeletal System

  • The skeletal system gives shape and support to the body.
  • It protects delicate internal organs like the brain, heart, and lungs.
  • Bones help in movement with the help of muscles and joints.

Structure of Bones and Joints

  • Bones are made of calcium, phosphorus, and collagen.
  • The outer part is hard and smooth; the inner part is spongy and contains bone marrow.
  • Joints are places where two or more bones meet.

Parts of the Skeletal System

  • Skull: 22 bones that protect the brain; only lower jaw is movable.
  • Ribcage: 12 pairs of ribs and sternum; protects heart and lungs; last 2 pairs are floating ribs.
  • Backbone: Made of 33 vertebrae; protects spinal cord; allows bending and twisting.
