What is Work?

  • In science, work is done only when a force moves an object in the direction of the force.
  • If there is no movement, no work is done — even if you are applying force.
  • Examples: Pushing a wall does not count as work because the wall does not move.

What is Energy?

  • Energy is the ability or capacity to do work.
  • We need energy to apply force and do work.
  • We get energy from food, the Sun, fuels, wind, and water.

Forms of Energy

  • Heat Energy: Comes from the Sun, burning fuels. Used for cooking and warming.
  • Light Energy: Helps us see. Comes from the Sun, bulbs, candles.
  • Mechanical Energy: Energy of motion or position. Includes kinetic (moving) and potential (stored) energy.

  • Sun is the main source of energy — gives heat and light.
  • Plants use solar energy to make food (photosynthesis).
  • Fuels like coal, petrol, and natural gas are formed from ancient plants and animals — called fossil fuels.
