What to Focus On

  • A fraction is a part of a whole.
  • It has a numerator (top) and denominator (bottom).
  • Denominator ≠ 0.

  • Proper: numerator < denominator
  • Improper: numerator ≥ denominator
  • Mixed: whole + fraction

  • To convert mixed to improper: (whole × denominator) + numerator
  • To convert improper to mixed: divide numerator by denominator

Common Mistakes to Avoid

You can add or subtract fractions by simply adding or subtracting both numerators and denominators separately.

The larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction — always.

Improper fractions are incorrect or not allowed.
