  • Percent means 'per hundred'.
  • Symbol for percent is '%'.
  • Percent is the numerator of a fraction with denominator 100.

  • Multiply fraction or decimal by 100 to get percent.

  • Remove % and divide by 100 to convert to fraction or decimal.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Percent means any part of a number, so 30% of 50 is just 30.

To convert a fraction to percent, just multiply numerator by 100 — so 3/4 becomes 300%.

When expressing one quantity as a percent of another, the units don't matter — so 50 cm as percent of 2 m is 50/2 × 100%.

Memory Tips

Meaning of 'Percent': Per = for every, Cent = hundred

Symbol % means divide by 100

To convert fraction to percent: Multiply by 100%

To convert percent to fraction: Divide by 10or move decimal two places left
