Basic Concept of Fractions

  • A fraction represents a part of a whole.
  • It is written in the form \(\frac{a}{b}\), where \(a\) is the numerator and \(b\) is the denominator.
  • The denominator cannot be zero.

Types of Fractions

  • Proper Fraction: Numerator < Denominator (e.g., \(\frac{3}{5}\)).
  • Improper Fraction: Numerator ≥ Denominator (e.g., \(\frac{7}{4}\)).
  • Mixed Fraction: Combination of a whole number and a proper fraction (e.g., \(2\frac{1}{3}\)).

Converting Between Mixed and Improper Fractions

  • To convert mixed to improper: Multiply whole number by denominator, add numerator, keep same denominator.
  • To convert improper to mixed: Divide numerator by denominator. Quotient = whole number, remainder = new numerator.

Operations on Fractions

  • To add or subtract fractions, convert to like fractions using LCM of denominators.
  • To multiply fractions, multiply numerators and denominators separately.
  • To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor.
