1. What an Adverb Does

  • An adverb adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • Example: The traveller walked briskly. Here, briskly tells how the traveller walked.
  • Example: Today I faced a very difficult situation. Here, very adds to the meaning of the adjective difficult.

2. Kinds of Adverbs

  • There are four classes of adverbs: simple, interrogative, relative, and sentence adverbs.
  • Adverbs of manner tell how an action is performed.
  • Adverbs of place tell where an action is performed.

3. Formation of Adverbs

  • Most adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding -ly.
  • Examples: quick → quickly, loud → loudly, slow → slowly, lazy → lazily, active → actively, easy → easily, beautiful → beautifully, careless → carelessly.
  • Some adverbs have exactly the same form as adjectives.

4. Position of Adverbs

  • Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually go after the verb if the verb is intransitive.
  • They go after the object if the verb is transitive.
  • For emphasis, time adverbs may be placed at the beginning of a sentence.
