1. What an Adverb Does
- An adverb adds to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
- Example: The traveller walked briskly. Here, briskly tells how the traveller walked.
- Example: Today I faced a very difficult situation. Here, very adds to the meaning of the adjective difficult.
2. Kinds of Adverbs
- There are four classes of adverbs: simple, interrogative, relative, and sentence adverbs.
- Adverbs of manner tell how an action is performed.
- Adverbs of place tell where an action is performed.
3. Formation of Adverbs
- Most adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding -ly.
- Examples: quick → quickly, loud → loudly, slow → slowly, lazy → lazily, active → actively, easy → easily, beautiful → beautifully, careless → carelessly.
- Some adverbs have exactly the same form as adjectives.
4. Position of Adverbs
- Adverbs of manner, place, and time usually go after the verb if the verb is intransitive.
- They go after the object if the verb is transitive.
- For emphasis, time adverbs may be placed at the beginning of a sentence.
