  • A noun is the name of a person, animal, place or thing.
  • A noun can also name materials, an idea, an emotion, a quality, or a state.
  • Nouns are of four kinds: proper, common, collective, and abstract.

  • All nouns can be classified as abstract or concrete.
  • Concrete nouns occupy space and can be seen, felt, and touched.
  • Abstract nouns do not occupy space, so they cannot be seen or touched, though they can be felt and understood.

  • Abstract nouns can be formed from adjectives, verbs, and common nouns.
  • Abstract nouns can be formed from adjectives, e.g. brave to bravery, long to length, false to falsehood.
  • Abstract nouns can be formed from verbs, e.g. know to knowledge, choose to choice, judge to judgment.

4. Countable and Uncountable Nouns

  • A countable noun has a plural form; an uncountable noun does not have one.
  • Countables may be used with words such as a, one, two, few, many.
  • Uncountables cannot be used with a, one, a few; instead words like little and much are used.
