Topics in Prepositions

1. What a Preposition Does

  • A preposition shows the relation between a noun or pronoun and some other word in a sentence.
  • A preposition is placed before the noun or pronoun whose relation it shows.
  • Prepositions can also be placed before noun-like words such as gerunds.

2. Prepositions of Time

  • At is used for a definite point of time and also for some indefinite periods such as at night.
  • On is used with days and dates.
  • In is used with parts of the day, months, years, and seasons.

  • At is used for villages, small towns, and a general neighbourhood.
  • In is used for bigger towns, states, countries, and something contained.
  • Between is used with exactly two persons or things.

4. Prepositions of Movement and Direction

  • To shows destination or reaching a place.
  • Towards shows direction, not necessarily reaching the place.
  • Into shows movement towards the interior of something.
