1. What a Verb Is

  • A verb denotes an action, being, or possession.
  • Action verbs show what someone or something does.
  • Being verbs show a state or condition.

2. Transitive, Intransitive, and Incomplete Verbs

  • A transitive verb needs an object to complete its meaning.
  • A transitive verb can have a direct object and an indirect object.
  • A direct object directly receives the action of the verb.

3. Auxiliary Verbs and Main Verbs

  • All verbs other than the fourteen auxiliary verbs are main verbs.
  • Auxiliary verbs are used with main verbs to form tenses and passive forms.
  • The fourteen auxiliary verbs are be, have, do, will, would, can, could, may, might, shall, should, must, ought(to), and used(to).

4. Finite and Non-finite Verbs

  • All verb forms other than the -ing form and to-form are finite.
  • To-forms are also called infinitives.
  • The -ing form and the to-form are non-finite verbs.
