Core idea

one day's work = 1 / No. of days required to complete the work

number of days required to complete a work = 1 / One day work

Time required to do a certain work = Work to be done / Work done in unit time

Direct variation

value of required quantity = value of unit quantity × number of units

Arrow method cross ratio: (value on the head)/(value on the tail) for one arrow = (value on the head)/(value on the tail) for the other arrow

Inverse variation

value of required quantity = value from unit case adjusted inversely

Arrow method cross ratio: (value on the head)/(value on the tail) for one arrow = (value on the head)/(value on the tail) for the other arrow

Worked examples to remember

₹ x / ₹ 400 = 28 / 10 => x = 1,120

x / 45 = 0.6 / 0.75 => x = 36

4 × 5 = 20; 20 / 4 = 5

60 × 4 = 240; 240 / 3 = 80

2000 ÷ (8 / 15) = 3750; 3750 × (3 / 5) = 2250
