  • Coordination means the interlinking of body activities according to the needs of the body.
  • There are two types of coordination: nervous coordination and chemical coordination.
  • Nervous coordination is brought about by the nervous system.

2. Neuron: Structural and Functional Unit

  • A neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
  • A neuron has two main parts: cyton and axon.
  • Cyton is the main cell body and contains the nucleus.

3. Types of Nerves

  • A nerve is formed of a bundle of axons enclosed in a tubular medullary sheath.
  • The medullary sheath acts as insulation and prevents mixing of impulses in adjacent fibres.
  • There are three kinds of nerves: sensory nerve, motor nerve, and mixed nerve.

4. Human Nervous System

  • The human nervous system has two main divisions: central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.
  • The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord.
  • The brain is protected within the skull.
