Transport System in Plants

  • Transportation is the process in which substances absorbed or made in one part of a plant are moved to other parts.
  • A vascular bundle is formed by xylem and phloem together.
  • Xylem transports water and mineral salts from roots to aerial parts of the plant.

Xylem: Structure and Function

  • Xylem forms a tubular passage for water and mineral salts.
  • Xylem tracheids are elongated dead cells with tapering ends and pitted thickened walls.
  • Xylem vessels are tube-like dead structures open at both ends and placed one above another.

Phloem: Structure and Function

  • Phloem transports food manufactured by leaves to all parts of the plant.
  • Translocation of solutes refers to the transport of food.
  • Glucose produced during photosynthesis is stored as starch and transported as sucrose solution through phloem.

Water Absorption by Roots

  • Only roots can absorb water; leaves or stem cannot.
  • Root hairs are extensions of epidermal cells of the root.
  • The cell wall of root hair is freely permeable.
