1. Endocrine System and Hormones

  • The body has two types of glands: exocrine glands and endocrine glands.
  • Exocrine glands send their secretions through ducts to target organs.
  • Endocrine glands are ductless glands and pour their secretions directly into the blood.

2. Thyroid Gland

  • The thyroid is a bilobed gland situated on either side of the wind pipe, just below the larynx.
  • It secretes thyroxine.
  • Thyroxine is an iodine-containing protein.

3. Adrenal Glands

  • The adrenal glands are like caps over the kidneys.
  • Each adrenal gland has two parts: a central medulla and a peripheral cortex.
  • The medulla secretes adrenaline.

4. Pancreas, Insulin and Glucagon

  • The pancreas is situated behind the stomach.
  • It is mainly a digestive gland, but it also has hormone-secreting Islets of Langerhans.
  • Islets of Langerhans secrete insulin and glucagon.
