1. Basic Ideas in Probability
- An experiment is an action which results in some well defined outcomes.
- A random experiment has more than one possible outcome, and it is not possible to predict any outcome in advance.
- In this chapter, the word experiment means random experiment.
2. Outcomes of Common Random Experiments
- A coin tossed once has 2 outcomes: H and T.
- A coin tossed two times or two coins tossed together once has 4 outcomes: HH, HT, TH, TT.
- A coin tossed three times has 8 possible outcomes.
3. Probability Formula and Worked Examples
- Probability is the ratio of favourable outcomes to total outcomes.
- The numerator is the number of outcomes that support the event.
- The denominator is the total number of possible outcomes.
