1. What an Adverb Does
- An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
- Adverbs give extra information such as manner, place, time, frequency, degree, probability, reason, and interrogation.
- Examples show how one adverb can change the meaning of a sentence by showing how, where, when, how often, or how much.
2. Position of Adverbs in Sentences
- Adverbs may be placed at the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence.
- Adverbs of manner, time, and place can be placed after intransitive verbs or after the object of a transitive verb.
- Some adverbs of time and place can be placed at the beginning of a sentence or clause.
3. Placement Rules for Different Kinds of Adverbs
- Adverbs of frequency, probability, and degree are usually placed before the main verb.
- Adverbs of frequency are placed after an auxiliary verb or a modal.
- If there are two words in the verb, the adverb of frequency is placed after the auxiliary verb.
4. Order of Multiple Adverbs
- If there is more than one adverb in a sentence, they appear in a certain order.
- The standard order is Manner, Place, Frequency, Time.
- This order is more flexible than adjective order.
