Indirect speech reports what a person said without using their exact words. It often uses a reporting clause like said, asked, or requested.

If the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, the tense of the verb in the reported speech does not change. Example: The doctor says, "You will get well soon." becomes The doctor says that …
What happens to simple present tense in indirect speech when the reporting verb is past?
Answer
Simple present changes to simple past when the reporting verb is in the past tense. Example: "Smita goes for a run every day." becomes He said that Smita went for a run every day.
What happens to present continuous tense in indirect speech when the reporting verb is past?

Present continuous changes to past continuous. Example: "I am swimming." becomes Rohini said that she was swimming.
