Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Basic Idea of Indices

  • a^m denotes a multiplied by itself m times.
  • a is called the base.
  • m is called the power, exponent, or index.
2

2. Laws of Indices

  • Product Law combines powers with the same base by adding exponents.
  • Quotient Law divides powers with the same base by subtracting exponents.
  • Power Law raises a power to another power by multiplying exponents.
3

3. Powers of Products and Quotients

  • A power applied to a product is distributed to each factor.
  • A power applied to a quotient is distributed to the numerator and denominator.
  • These rules make expressions with brackets much easier to simplify.
4

4. Fractional Indices and Roots

  • The n-th root of a equals a^(1/n), for a ≠ 0 and n a positive integer.
  • Fractional index a^(m/n) equals the n-th root of a^m, for a ≠ 0.
  • Conversely, n-th root of a^m equals a^(m/n).
