The Ottoman Turks captured Constantinople in 1453, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire and the Medieval age in Europe. This event was significant because it blocked traditional trade routes between Europe and Asia, forcing Europeans to find new sea routes to India and the East. The year 1492 was when Columbus reached America, 1517 was when Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation, and 1498 was when Vasco da Gama reached India. The capture of Constantinople in 1453 was a catalyst for geographical explorations and Renaissance developments.

Bartholomew Dias

Bartholomew Dias was the Portuguese explorer who reached the southern tip of the African continent and called it the Cape of Good Hope. This was a crucial step in finding a sea route to India around Africa. Vasco da Gama later used this route to actually reach India in 1498, Ferdinand Magellan was known for his attempt to circumnavigate the globe, and Christopher Columbus reached the Americas. Dias's achievement in rounding the Cape of Good Hope opened the way for European trade with Asia via the sea route around Africa.

Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama of Portugal successfully reached India in 1498 by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope, crossing the Indian Ocean, and landing at Calicut. This fulfilled the European dream of finding a direct sea route to India for spice trade. Bartholomew Dias only reached the Cape of Good Hope but didn't continue to India, Christopher Columbus reached the Americas thinking it was India, and Ferdinand Magellan was attempting to reach Asia via the Pacific. Vasco da Gama's achievement was crucial for establishing Portuguese dominance in Indian Ocean trade.

Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483-1546) started the Religious Reformation movement in Germany. In 1517, he expressed strong opposition against the Catholic Church's practice of selling confession letters (indulgences) and challenged the Pope's authority. His followers came to be known as 'Protestants'. While Ignatius Loyola led the Counter-Reformation to strengthen the Catholic Church, John Calvin and Henry VIII were later Protestant reformers. Luther's act of posting his 95 Theses and his subsequent teachings fundamentally challenged Catholic doctrine and sparked the Protestant Reformation across Europe.
