Card 1Refraction of light

What is refraction of light?

Answer

Refraction of light is the change in direction of light while going from one transparent medium to another transparent medium.

Card 2Everyday effects of refraction

Why does a pencil partly dipped in water look bent or broken?

Answer

Light changes direction when it comes out of water into air. Because of this refraction, the part inside water appears shifted, so the pencil looks bent or broken near the surface.

Card 3Everyday effects of refraction

Why does a coin placed in a vessel become visible when water is poured in?

Answer

As water is added, light from the coin bends while moving from water to air. The refraction allows the light to reach the eye, so the coin appears visible.

Card 4Rules of refraction

A ray travels from a rarer medium to a denser medium. How does it bend?

Answer

It bends towards the normal.

Card 5Rules of refraction

A ray travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium. How does it bend?

Answer

It bends away from the normal.

Card 6Rules of refraction

What happens when a ray is incident normally at the boundary between two media?

Answer

It does not change its direction and hence does not get refracted.

Card 7Glass slab refraction

In a glass slab, what is the relation between the incident ray and the emergent ray?

Answer

The emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray but displaced sideways.

Card 8Glass slab refraction

In a glass slab experiment, if the angle of incidence at the first surface is i and the angle of refraction is r, what is the angle of incidence at the second surface?

Answer

The angle of incidence at the second surface is equal to r.
