Card 1Chemical reaction

What is a chemical reaction?

Answer

A chemical reaction is a process in which some substances undergo bond breaking and are transformed into new substances by formation of new bonds.

Card 2Reactants and products

What are reactants and products?

Answer

Reactants are the substances taking part in a chemical reaction. Products are the new substances formed after the reaction.

Card 3Physical and chemical change

Why does a chemical change differ from a physical change?

Answer

A physical change happens when only the state or form changes, often temporarily. A chemical change changes the composition of matter and is usually permanent.

Card 4Physical change

Classify this change: ice turning into water.

Answer

This is a physical change because only the state changes from solid to liquid. The composition of water remains the same.

Card 5Chemical change

Classify this change: cooking of food.

Answer

This is a chemical change because new substances are formed and the composition changes permanently.

Card 6Chemical equation

How is a chemical equation written?

Answer

Reactants are written on the left side, products on the right side, and an arrow shows the direction of the reaction. Plus signs connect multiple reactants or products.

Card 7Displacement reaction

Write the chemical equation for zinc and copper sulphate.

Answer

CuSO4(aq) + Zn(s) → ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)

Card 8Displacement reaction

Why does zinc displace copper from copper sulphate?

Answer

Zinc is more reactive than copper, so zinc takes the place of copper in copper sulphate and forms zinc sulphate and copper.
