Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Latent Heat and Change of State

  • When ice is heated, its temperature stays at 0°C till all the ice melts.
  • After all ice melts, the water temperature rises to 100°C.
  • At 100°C, water stays at the same temperature till all water changes into steam.
2

2. Regulation and Pressure Effect

  • Applying pressure lowers the melting point of ice below 0°C, so ice melts under pressure.
  • Removing pressure restores the melting point to 0°C, so the water refreezes.
  • In the wire-through-ice experiment, the wire penetrates through the ice slab without breaking it.
3

3. Anomalous Behaviour of Water

  • Water contracts when heated from 0°C to 4°C instead of expanding.
  • At 4°C, the volume of water is minimum.
  • The density of water is maximum at 4°C.
4

4. Dew Point and Humidity

  • Humidity means the moisture in the atmosphere.
  • Water vapour is always present in the atmosphere because water keeps evaporating.
  • Air can contain only a limited amount of water vapour at a given temperature.
