3. Aerobic respiration: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and electron transfer chain

  • In aerobic respiration, glucose is oxidized in three steps.
  • Glycolysis is the first step and occurs in the cytoplasm.
  • In glycolysis, one glucose molecule is broken down step by step to form pyruvic acid, ATP, NADH, and water.

4. Anaerobic respiration

  • Anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen.
  • Glycolysis and fermentation are the two steps of anaerobic respiration.
  • In anaerobic respiration, glucose is incompletely oxidized and less energy is released.
