2. Traditional Classification: Non-chordates and Chordates

  • Traditionally, the animal kingdom is divided into Non-chordates and Chordates based on the presence or absence of notochord.
  • Non-chordates lack a rod-like notochord supporting the body.
  • Non-chordates lack pharyngeal gill-slits.

3. Grades of Organization, Symmetry, Germ Layers, and Body Cavity

  • In unicellular organisms, all life functions are performed by the same cell; this is called Protoplasmic grade of organization.
  • If tissues are not formed in multicellular animals, the body organization is called Cellular grade organization.
  • If cells form tissues, it is called Cell-tissue grade organization.

  • Phylum Porifera are sponges with the simplest body plan.
  • Porifera show cellular grade organization.
  • Porifera usually have asymmetrical body.
