  • Environment is a broad concept. Physical, chemical and biological factors affecting living organisms in any possible way are collectively called environment.
  • Environment includes biotic factors and abiotic factors.
  • There are two main types of environment: natural environment and artificial environment.

2. Food chain, consumers, and balance

  • Producers like plants are important in an ecosystem.
  • Herbivores like deer, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, and camels feed on producers.
  • Predators like lion and tiger help prevent overpopulation of herbivores.

3. Environmental conservation and pollution

  • Environmental conservation is necessary because human activities can disturb environmental balance.
  • Population explosion, fast industrialization, indiscriminate use of natural resources, deforestation, and unplanned urbanization are major reasons for environmental pollution.
  • Environmental pollution means undesirable and unacceptable change in the surrounding environment due to natural events or human activities.

4. Laws and institutions for environmental protection

  • The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 prohibits the use of reserved forest land for other purposes.
  • Permission of the central government is compulsory for mining activities on forest-reserved land.
  • A person disobeying the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 is entitled to imprisonment for 15 days.
