1. Heredity and Hereditary Changes

  • Gregor Johann Mendel is the pioneer of modern genetics.
  • Heredity is the transfer of biological characters from one generation to another via genes.

2. Transcription, Translation and Translocation

  • DNA stores information for protein synthesis.
  • This is called as Central Dogma.
  • RNA contains uracil instead of thymine found in DNA.

3. Evolution and Its Meaning

  • Evolution is the gradual change occurring in living organisms over a long duration.
  • Formation of new species due to changes in specific characters of several generations of living organisms as a response to natural selection, is called as evolution.
  • The duration of evolutionary changes is at most 300 crore years.

4. Evidences of Evolution

  • Morphological evidences are based on similarities in body features.
  • In animals, similarities in mouth structure, eye position, nostrils, ear pinnae and body hair suggest common ancestry.
  • In plants, similarities in leaf shape, venation and petiole suggest common ancestry.
