  • Metals are reactive. They lose electrons easily and become positively charged ions, so they are electropositive elements.
  • Nonmetals are electronegative elements because they form negatively charged ions by accepting electrons.
  • Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides.

4. Ionic Compounds

  • Ionic compounds are formed from cations and anions held together by electrostatic attraction.
  • Ionic compounds are crystalline in nature.
  • Ionic compounds are hard and brittle.
