1. Chemical Reaction and Chemical Equation

  • A chemical reaction is a process in which some substances undergo bond breaking and are transformed into new substances by formation of new bonds.
  • Reactants are the substances taking part in a chemical reaction.
  • Products are the substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction.

2. Balancing Chemical Equations

  • An equation is balanced when the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides.
  • Balancing is done by trial and error using whole-number factors.
  • The formula of a compound must not be changed while balancing.

3. Types of Chemical Reactions

  • Chemical reactions are mainly classified as combination, decomposition, displacement, and double displacement reactions.
  • When two or more reactants combine to form a single product, it is a combination reaction.
  • When one reactant gives two or more products, it is a decomposition reaction.

4. Heat Changes in Reactions and Processes

  • Endothermic processes absorb heat from outside.
  • Exothermic processes give out heat.
  • Melting of ice and dissolution of potassium nitrate in water are endothermic processes.
