Topics in Gravitation

1

1. Core ideas of gravitation

  • Gravitation is a universal force acting between any two objects in the universe.
  • Newton saw that an apple falls vertically downward and concluded that the earth attracts the apple towards its centre.
  • The force of gravitation acts between the earth and the moon, between planets and the Sun, and between every pair of masses.
2

2. Kepler’s laws and Newton’s connection

  • Johannes Kepler used Brahe’s observational data to discover three laws of planetary motion.
  • Kepler’s first law says that the orbit of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the foci.
  • Kepler’s second law says that the line joining the planet and the Sun sweeps equal areas in equal intervals of time.
3

3. Newton’s universal law of gravitation and the inverse square law

  • Every object in the universe attracts every other object with a definite force.
  • The force is directly proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
  • If one mass is doubled, the force doubles.
4

4. Gravity near the earth: g and its variation

  • Acceleration due to gravity is the acceleration produced by the earth’s gravitational force on objects near it.
  • It is a vector quantity and is directed towards the centre of the earth.
  • The acceleration due to gravity is the same for all objects at a given place, regardless of their properties.
